Lovely Launceston

Don’t know much about Launceston yet? Don’t worry, this once hidden Australian gem in the north of Tasmania is quickly being discovered and visitors are falling in love with it – as are our students. Launceston is one of Australia’s oldest cities. Its streetscapes are dominated by Georgian colonial architecture, treelined streets and relaxing parks. If coffee is your thing, you’ll find some great cafes to while your time away with friends. Being compact, Launceston is also easy to get around by foot or bike. Only five minutes’ drive from the city, you can find yourself in a virtual wilderness at Cataract Gorge surrounded by bushland, cliffs, a natural pool to swim in and wallabies (mini kangaroos) posing for photos.

In fact, Launceston’s such a cool place, Tasmania’s most popular international music and arts festival, Mona Foma is shifting from Hobart to Launceston! (Hint: if you take up the accommodation in January, you’ll be the envy of every Australian with some of the cheapest accommodation available during the festival!).

If adventure is more your style, there is a huge range of day trips from Launceston to keep you entertained on weekends. Try swimming at sapphire blue beaches, hiking at World Heritage-listed Cradle Mountain-Lake St Claire, mountain biking at the world-class Blue Derby, sampling fresh gourmet food and beverages, visiting lavender farms or skiing at Ben Lomond. The options are endless.
