Social media and nursing practice

Casella’s and Mills (2014)  stated social media has the potential to profoundly connect nurses to their clients and to other professionals. The authors discussed a future where nursing integrated social media into health care for the purpose of improving client or patient out comes. Casella’s and Mills (2014) use the nursing process of assessing, diagnosing, planning, implementing and evaluating to demonstrate the potential of social media as a legitimate form of connection with patients, colleagues and for information sharing with others external to the individual, network or organisation. The authors provide examples of how different methods of social media have been used to share, disseminate and receive information.  They draw on socio-technological theory to support and promote their notion that the use of social media in healthcare needs more consideration by nurses in the workplace.

Much of this blog space is part of the process described by Casella’s and Mills (2014). The purpose of this blog is awareness raising, provision of university and contemporary evidence-based information about clinical supervision, mentorship, facilitation and preceptorship.  It is an adjunct to traditional methods of gaining information. I use this blog to promote professional development opportunities, innovations in health care of interest to educators and supervisors. I encourage connection with community of practice of clinical supervisors @PEPCommunity on Twitter.  There are other nurses using various methods within the social media space to connect, learn and enjoy.
