Continuing Professional Development opportunities

Professional development is an important part of remaining contemporary in healthcare and is part of maintaining our registration as a nurse.  This year the NMBA released new registered nurse standards for practice and a new standard for continuing professional development. This standard requires all nurses to undertake 20 hours of  professional development.

There are a number of ways to maintain registration including self-directed learning using a range of strategies. These can include online learning packages such as FIRST2ACT, and NHET-Sim.

FIRST2ACTweb is an online simulation web based program for nurses and health professionals. It offers access to a free online learning package about the deteriorating patient. It is an international collaboration underpinned by evidence-based research. The program takes 1-2 hours to complete and is comprised of quizzes, presentations and scenario based interactive videos. There are 8 steps to complete the program and you can revisit any previous steps. The only catch is you need the time to complete the program in one go. You can pause between pages though.

Blood safe eLearning Australia also provides free online learning  about transfusion practice and patient blood management. The courses are endorsed by the NMBA. They recommend that it takes approximately 2 hours to complete 5 modules in the package and this can be recorded as CPD.

Hand hygiene Australia also provides healthcare workers with an online learning package that includes a downloadable certificate of completion that can be included as evidence of CPD.

NHET-Sim is a nationwide training programme that re-opened for registrations on 1 July 2016, and is aimed at building clinical training capacity. You have four months to complete the modules once registered with the programme, which are free to undertake. Some modules have workshop content and some are online only.

If you have any suggestions about other opportunities for online CPD, you are welcome to post them here. Please join us @PEPCommunity.
