Teaching and supporting nursing students on clinical placements

This article by Anderson and colleagues (in press) details a grounded theory approach to explore registered nurse understanding of the RN standard of providing professional development and to teach and support students undertaking work integrated learning.  The authors report that the core category was “it is the right thing to do”.  Participants in the study felt that they had a sense of responsibility to teach and support nursing students even though it added to their daily workload. They also found that nurses lacked awareness of the standard of the requirement to support and mentor students in the workplace. Another finding was nurses believed they had the choice rather than it being part of the RN Standards for Practice (2016).

The authors discuss these finding in relation to registered nurse understanding of the codes and standards and the need for education and understanding about the RN standards in relation to teaching and supporting students on placement.
