So, you’ve registered for Orientation Week and received your student card and enrolled in your units. Well done! The next part is  picking all the best orientation events to attend to meet people you’ll be studying with. This guide is here to help you choose the most worthwhile.

First off, a big hint on “Orientation Week” terminology so you don’t look like a straight off the plane “fresher” (first year student). “Orientation Week” actually takes place over TWO weeks not one week, so it’s really Orientation fortnight. Weird, we know, but this is one of the many quirky things that you’ll come to love about your new life so you may as well embrace it in your first week (fortnight?!).

To make it easier  (or maybe more confusing!), the first week, from Monday the 16th to the 20th of February, is known officially as University Orientation Week and is run by University staff. It’s the “official” part of your introduction to university and you need to register for it. Make sure you do – the events will really help you and introduce you to all the things that help you pass courses. We don’t cover them much in this blog but we do strongly encourage you to attend all of the sessions you can.

The second week, from Monday the 23rd is run by the Student Representative Council (ie students) and is known as O’Week or Welcome Week depending on which campus you’re basedatn. You don’t need to register because since when have you had to register to attend parties, right?! and that’s what this second week pretty much consists of – heaps of fun parties and markets so you can get to make friends, find clubs to join and just work out the social side of university.

This guide will include both weeks grouped into either South or North, South being for Hobart/Sandy Bay campuses and North for Launceston campus (AMC, Inveresk and Newnham).
