Australian Nurse Teacher Competencies. A framework to describe learning and teaching

Competency is is an attribute that student nurses work towards throughout their undergraduate degree. After registration nurses continue to seek competency as they navigate their way,  undertaking a myriad of  roles  in a variety of settings. On gaining knowledge, skills and developing behaviours or attributes in any of these areas of nursing, registered nurses may also be required to supervise, precept, mentor, educate or facilitate undergraduate students. There are many words used to describe the learningand teaching ‘work’ of nurses who nurture and / or assess students in nursing while they are undertaking professional or clinical experience in a work integrated learning environment.

The commonality of the definitions of these words is  they describe the behaviours of guidance and support. The Australian Nurse Teacher’s Society has released competency standards to enable the nurses who guide and support students to understand their role and function when they are supervising, preceptoring, mentoring, educating or facilitating the learning and teaching of students in the various nursing contexts.

The competencies describe the core role of faciltating learning to enable students to progress satisfactorily towards gaining nursing competency. The competency standards focus on three Domains.  These are:

  • Domain 1: Teaching and learning
  • Domain 2: Communication
  • Domain 3: Professional practice.

Each Domain has a number of cues that outlines or describes the knowledge, skills, behaviours and attributes required to be competent as a nurse educator.  This role requires the ability to communicate effectively, to provide  guidance and support in learning to students, as advanced practitioners.

These competencies provide a framework for promoting understanding of the role of the nurse teacher, whatever word is used, to describe the activities of guiding and supporting students whether they are in, or out of the classroom and ‘learning nursing thinking’.

Do you have any comments about how the competencies describe the role and function of nurses who guide and support students in the practice context? You can post them here, or alternatively send them to Carey Mather to post them for you.
