Planning for learning during professional experience or work integrated learning

Working within a health care setting as a student provides many opportunities to gain knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours that support development into into a competence health professional. Lake and Ryan (2006) describe the process of planning for learning while students are placed within a health care environment. They suggest that identifying learning outcomes are essential. These need to be specific, achievable and measurable. They may include clinical, communication and professional outcomes including topics or areas of specific interest within this environment.

Previous blogs have discussed strategies to enable optimum learning in the workplace. This has included developing a positive learning environment as well as use of effective questions and giving feedback. There are strategies that can be used to maximise learning in the workplace.

Lake and Ryan (2006) indicate that orientation, development of a learning plan, including expectations are imperative. They also mention that a range of different learning opportunities need to be encouraged or facilitated. Debriefing and providing feedback are important for the development of self-awareness and reflection of learners.

The authors suggest sharing the work to expose the learner to a range of opportunities can also engage learners and provide an understanding in a broader context.
