Australian Nursing Standards Assessment Tool resource manual


The publication of the ANSAT  OLT funded project provides a comprehensive and easy to understand approach to student assessment. The general information provided in the manual can be applied for assessment of students in practice even if the institution or practice environment is not currently using the tool described in this manual.

The manual provides an easy to understand background to the purpose of standardised assessment. This manual guides the reader through the process of formative, summative assessment and feedback that leads to understanding about the tool and  links to the ANMC competency standards (2006). The manual provides examples of the performance standards to be used for the global rating scale, to be applied at the end of a professional or clinical practice experience. The terminology used is applicable to other scales that are also in use for student assessment. This scale is described in plain language and grasps the nuances between excellence and satisfactory performance in practice.

Clinical supervisors may find the section on challenges in assessment are also useful regardless of scales used. The manual discusses rater bias, halo and devil effect, anchorage and leniency bias that can change scoring or perceptions of student progress. The creep of central tendency to assess towards the average  or outcome bias where a known outcome can influence decision making both positively or negative is useful for reflection. This manual also provides strategies and hints for students having difficulty, including what to do if a student does not agree with the evaluation of their performance.
