Using social media for CPD

The Journal of Advanced Nursing recently published online an editorial by Moorley and Chinn (2014) about the use of social media for continuing professional development (CPD). While the editorial is in the UK context it applies in Australia as well. I have blogged and published on this topic and your reading of this blog forms part of what these authors and I concur.  Links to these publications relating to CPD and social media and mobile learning can be found here: CPD, mobile technology and social media (Chapter 10); CPD and usability of a community of practice; Use of mobile learning as a workforce development strategy; and human factors that impact on the use of mobile learning in the workplace.    The editorial is useful in that the authors provide examples of how to use social media and provide evidence of engagement for CPD. The article also provides tips about appropriate documentation. Moorley and Chinn (2014) also discuss the use of other Web 2.0 platforms that can be used for CPD as well.  These include Facebook, YouTube, blogs and spontaneous social media discussions. If you use these key words here,  there are other blogs in this blog that discuss these issues. The authors even suggest that use of a blog for reflection and ‘revalidation’ (the equivalent to evidence of mandatory hours) can be used.  This blog is an example of this process. In conclusion, these authors suggest there is a need for clear guidance from professional bodies and also ensuring that nurses take responsibility for accurately documenting their CPD using these platforms. Certainly I agree there is huge scope for mobile learning and using social media for CPD.
