Economic Society of Australia (Tas Branch) – Presentation

In 2016-17, the Commonwealth is budgeted to provide $2.3 billion in GST grants to Tasmania. This is so that Tasmania has the same capacity to deliver services, such as schools and hospitals, as the rest of Australia. GST grants are forty percent of the Tasmanian budget.

Join the Tasmanian Branch of the Economic Society of Australia for a presentation by Dr Alexis Wadsley on the principles of Horizontal Fiscal Equalisation which underpins the GST distribution model and how it may boost productivity. This will be followed by a Chatham House discussion on the more recent debate on GST distribution.

Dr Wadsley is the Vice-President of the Tasmanian Branch and has worked across industry, finance, academia, consulting and for the State Government. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Tasmania.

Date: Thursday 1 September 2016
Time: 6.00 pm for 6.15 pm start
Location: Harvard 2, Centenary Building, University of Tasmania, Sandy Bay Campus
Cost: Free. Nibbles and drink will be provided.

RSVPs are invited: http://esatas.org.au/event/20930/GST_and_Horizontal_Fiscal_Equalisation_-_Good_for_Productivity
