Abstract:
Globalisation and transgression of human impacts at a range of scales is adding complexity and difficulties in understanding human-ecosystem interactions. Models and analyses are also increasing in complexity to the point where simulation of the actual problem seems possible but without quantum advances in understanding. I’ll outline an engineering-based systems approach where complexity is retained within simpler typologies whose modes and stability affect system behaviour in response to drivers. Applications of the approach will be demonstrated for some problems in socio-economics, sustainable livelihoods, global water masses and a potential regime shift in Antarctica.
