Abstract
The Bureau of Meteorology has recently released a new long-term temperature data set for Australia, the Australian Climate Observations Reference Network – Surface Air Temperature (ACORN-SAT) data set. This data set contains daily data for 112 of the highest-quality long-term Australian temperature stations, many of them extending from 1910 to the present day. It is believed to be the first national-level temperature data set homogenised at the daily timescale, allowing detailed analyses of variability and change in temperature extremes as well as in means.
In this presentation, the background to this data set and the methods used in its development will be presented, as well as some early results from analyses undertaken using the new data set.
