Leadership and Practice Development in Health: Quality and Safety through Workplace Learning.


The Leadership and Practice Development in Health: Quality and Safety through Workplace Learning Conference was held in Hobart last week. This year’s theme was technology and simulation in health.  Conference extracts and peer reviewed papers are available. The plenary sessions focused on technology and simulation. Prof. Paddy Nixon spoke from his experience about the potentials and pitfalls. While Isabelle Ellis recounted the strengths and weaknesses and unexpected findings of an ehealth project to coordinatte care at the end of life. Prof. Richard Turner gave a humorous account of the journey to recruit and engage community stakeholders in healthcare education.

There were a number of other speakers that challenged current thinking about interprofessional learning and simulation.  Prof. Andrew Robinson discussed the expansion of medicine and paramedic students into residential aged care facilities and the learning from this process. While Chris Andrews, Carey Mather and others focused on supporting clinical supervisors in the workplace. This conference provided a information about current trends in practice development, technology and simulation.  There was a focus on technology to enhance this process. Advocacy and engagement were themes that were evident in the presentations. The weather in Hobart was spectacular as were the gardens at Government House.
