5 minutes with… Maria Unwin, Faculty of Health Emergency Department Research Assistant

What is your favourite childhood memory?
During school holidays as a child and young teenager we stayed on a large sheep farm in rural Victoria in old shearers’ quarters. I loved escaping the city and spending time in the country. The adventures always seemed much more fun in the country, complete with swooping magpies and the smell of freshly shorn wool.

What do you do to relax?
Quality time with friends and family, gardening, travelling, camping, bush walking.

What is your favourite winter meal?
Roast Lamb and veg.

What is your greatest dislike?
Junket – it makes me vomit.

What do you like most about your work?
I love the diversity I have in working between the University, as a research assistant, and the Tasmanian Health Service as a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department – there’s never a dull moment.

One wish for the future?
Am I allowed to say ‘world peace’? Seriously though, can you imagine what this world would be like if all humanity was considered equal?!

Tell us one thing people might not know about you.
My Oma (grandmother) was a Dutch Jew who hid her identity during WWII in order to survive.
