Global portfolio and committee update

Dear Colleagues,

As the new Associate Dean, Global in the College of Health and Medicine, I would like to take the opportunity to update you on the global portfolio and committee.

Newly Formed Global College Committee

I am pleased to announce that the College Global Committee membership was ratified by the College Management Team and has representatives from across the College including:

  • Professor Luke Bereznicki, representing the School of Medicine
  • Professor Michelle Cleary, representing the School of Health Sciences
  • Professor Heinrich Korner, representing the Menzies Institute for Medical Research
  • Caroline Gray, representing the Wicking Centre
  • Ben Jones, Director Strategic Partnerships and Business Development
  • Kiri Fitzpatrick, Manager Development and Engagement
  • Patrick Garnham, College Marketing Manager
  • Mike Leyden, SHS Business Manager and Proxy for the Executive Director

The group embodies a fine mix of professional and academic staff and are committed to achieving an ambitious agenda including the development of a College Global Strategy and planning for an optimal balance between international student recruitment at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

We are in the process of mapping our existing international connectivity and aim to systematically develop and leverage our strong international research collaborations. I would very much encourage all staff to engage with members of the Committee to maximise our opportunities in the global arena.

Student Mobility – Funding Available

An email was recently sent communicating that funding applications are now open for semester programs, study tours, short-term programs, practicums, clinical placements, internships and short-term research.  Applications can be for single-term or multi-year projects and are submitted for funding via the Government-initiative, New Colombo Plan (NCP).

The NCP is one of the best vehicles for international engagement. The NCP is an important source of financial support and has resulted in many overseas study opportunities for our student cohort.

For example, from 2014-2017 the University of Tasmania received $2.8 million to support 37 projects. A total pool of $50 million is available to Australian universities in 2019-2020.

Further information about the program is on the NCP Mobility Program website. Global Engagement (within the Global Division) recently appointed Anna Ekstrand as Team Leader Student Mobility and one of Anna’s key responsibilities is to oversee the NCP. Please do not hesitate to contact the Student Mobility Office at student.mobility@utas.edu.au with any questions. I strongly encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity. Please copy me in on applications for the current round (Andrew.Hills@utas.edu.au) closing at the end of April. We will continue to improve our processes and preparedness for subsequent NCP rounds.

I look forward to providing you with updates on the Global portfolio in coming months and encourage you to make contact with me if you have any suggestions or feedback throughout the year.

Andrew Hills

Many thanks,

Andrew
