Sydney – The year so far

Dear Colleagues,

As the Director of the Rozelle campus, Sydney in the College of Health and Medicine, I would like to take the opportunity to update you on the recent key activities here in Sydney.

2018 Graduation, Tuesday 17 April

The Sydney 2018 Graduation was held on Tuesday, 17 April at The Star Event Centre, Pyrmont. This new venue accommodated all students for family members, as this had been limited at the Recital Hall, Angel Place, were previous graduation had been held. Irrespective, it was a full house! It was also the Vice-Chancellors, Professor Rufus Black’s, first University of Tasmania graduation.

Approximately, 300 candidates from the College of Arts, Law and Education, College of Health and Medicine, and the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics (TSBE) were presented to the Deputy Chancellor, Mr Harvey Gibson.

The College of Health and Medicine presented students for graduation in:

  • Diploma, Associate Degree and Bachelor of Dementia Care
  • Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Nursing with Honours, and Postgraduate/Masters Nursing Specialisation
  • Bachelor of Paramedic Practice
  • Bachelor of Pharmacy
  • Graduate Certificate in Clinical Redesign

Sydney grad picMiss Sirinart Tasanalee, nursing student from the Darlinghurst campus and representing undergraduate students, provided the valedictory address. Mr Simon Radmore a student from the Australian Institute of Health Service Management, TSBE provided the valedictory address for the postgraduate students.

A number of special guests also attended Graduation representing many of our Sydney and NSW partners.

A celebration reception was held in the foyer after the graduation for students, family and friends and staff. It was gratifying to experience the joy of students and family at their achievements, and the diverse cultural backgrounds of many of our Sydney based students.

Formal visit by new Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rufus Black to Darlinghurst and Rozelle Tuesday, 17 April and Wednesday 18 April.

Professor Rufus Black visited the Darlinghurst and Rozelle campuses Tuesday, 17 April and Wednesday 18 April for his first formal visit. This provided Rufus also with the opportunity to meet informally with students and staff on both campuses over lunch and in a question and answer session.

Professor Black was provided with a tour of the campuses to see firsthand the resources available to students and staff and also see the plans for the next round of refurbishments at Rozelle.

Again, it was gratifying to see the informal exchange between Professor Black and students and staff.

Sydney Alumni event, Wednesday 18 April

Approximately 150 alumni attended the occasion at the new Australian Maritime College (AMC), University of Tasmania education centre at the Australian National Maritime Museum, Darling Harbour, Sydney. The early evening event provided the Sydney alumni with the opportunity to hear from the new Vice-Chancellor. After a short speech, alumni meet informally with Professor Black.

I look forward to providing you with updates on the Sydney strategy and the key focus areas of Director’s role – partnerships and student experience, in coming months and encourage you to make contact with me if you have any questions or feedback throughout the year.

Many thanks,

Greg

Professor Greg Rickard

Director, Rozelle
